Kickboxing
This course combines the best elements of Muay Thai, Karate, Filipino Kickboxing, and Western Boxing into one action packed workout. The first 20 minutes will consist of stretching and total body conditioning. The next 30 minutes we will work on street effective moves, including elbows, knees, kicks, and punch combinations. For the last 10 minutes, we will work on more exotic moves that will test your balance and coordination.
Arnis (Filipino Martial Arts)
Arnis is one of the most street effective martial arts around today. Our primary principle is that one technique can be used against the stick, knife, or empty hand. This way, we don't have to train three times as much. Arnis combines devastating elbows and knees, joint locks, and fast combinations. Like in Chess, you will learn to think two moves ahead of your opponent, so you can trap him with his own arm or weapon. For more info on Arnis, read our About Arnis Section.
KunTao Self Defense
Consider this course 60% Kickboxing and 60% Self-Defense (Yes, there is some overlap). After conditioning with devastating kickboxing combinations, we will work on joint locks, throws, and nerve strikes to debilitate your attacker, and practice real life situations where the techniques can be used effectively such as punches, pushes, grabs, or even knife, stick and gun attacks. This class will teach you to flow from your striking to your grappling and back so you know how to effectively use them together in a fight. Filipino Martial Arts are know for their fluidity of motion, so that a smaller defender can defeat a larger attacker by using many quick techniques that flow together in a vicious combination.
Kali (Weapons Fighting)
Filipino Martial Arts are known for there use of the stick and blade. This class will focus on being able to fight with sticks and knives, but like all Filipino Martial Arts, all techniques will be just as useful if you are unarmed. Although this course will focus on realistic fighting, we will also cover competition drills for stick sparring, and hone our skills with padded weapons and protective gear.
Hybrid Jiu Jitsu
What do you get when you take a core of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, add some Japanese small joint manipulation, throw in some Judo throws, and integrate Filipino Dumog dirty strikes and weapon techniques? You get our own blend of Jiu Jitsu. Whether you're here for sport or reality training, stand up or ground, Gi or no Gi, whether you fight fair or dirty, are female or male, you will get something out of this class. Students are encouraged to stay for open mat after class for either free wrestling or to perfect their techniques.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu - taught by Devin Bartolomeo
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has proved itself as the de facto standard of Self Defense on the Ground, and has proved itself in the ring time and time again. This class will give students an opportunity to focus solely on their ground technique with a top Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist. This class will be great for men and women alike who want to have options if someone tries to take you to the ground.
- We would like to add a noontime Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class in the upcoming months. If you would like to see a class during the weekdays, let me know what days and times an hour or hour and a half Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class would fit into your schedule.
- It is with great joy and much adieu we announce our new location of 1100 Wilson Blvd, Rosslyn, VA 22209. Classes will start Nov 1st with the schedule below. I apologize as they are finishing up construction, so we may have a smaller training area for the first week or two, or there may be some small changes to the schedule in the next few months as we get accustomed to our surroundings. Please stop by to check us out in our new, larger, better equipped training area. The location is a block from the Rosslyn Metro (Blue and Orange Lines), and there is a parking garage in the building which is free on nights and weekend with validation.
- Arnis DC Martial Arts is embracing Web 2.0. You can now follow us on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/arnisdc.
- Modern Arnis has suffered a tremendous loss as Grandmaster Roland Dantes passed away March 16th, 2009. GM Dantes was on the cover of Prof. Presas's pink book, and the star of the movie The Pacific Connection. He was also a Filipino Bodybuilder who won Mr. Philippines, and competed against Arnold Schwarzenegger. To learn more, you can check out his MySpace, or to listen to a radio interview with Roland. I was hoping to train with him in the Philippines, so it's just a life lesson that you have to take advantage of opportunities when you have them, because they won't be there forever.
- We just revamped our Facebook group. If you're on Facebook, join "Arnis DC Martial Arts" to see upcoming events and chat on the message boards about various topics. Also, we have listings on Yelp and Merchant Circle. Feel free to add a review if you have any insightful comments to share about our school.
